After I purchased my Philips Android TV, I was curious about how the TV would perform during gaming sessions. So, I connected my PS5 gaming console to my Philips Smart TV and tried a few games. While most games worked and looked fantastic, some FPS (first-person shooter) games had input lags. So, I was looking for solutions on the TV settings to reduce the input lags, and that is when I came across the Game mode option on Philips Smart TV.
You can turn on the Game mode on your Philips Smart TVs on the Picture settings. Switching to the Game mode reduced the input lag on the FPS games. Unfortunately, this game mode is only available on the Philips Android TV, Saphi TV, and non-smart TV models. Apart from the Game mode on Picture style, there is another setting you must tweak to get the best gaming experience.
In this user guide, I will show you how to switch to the Game picture style on different Philips TV models and tweak HDMI settings to get the best gaming experience on your Smart TV.

Best Gaming Settings for Philips TV
Apart from turning on the Game Mode in the picture style settings, you must also change the following settings to get the best gaming experience on your Philips Smart TV.
Note: Ensure you have connected your gaming console to the HDMI ports at the back of your TV. If you have connected your console to the HDMI ports on the side, you will not be able to change these settings.
1. Turn on your Philips Smart TV and click the Home button.
2. Choose the Settings icon on the home screen.
3. On the Settings page, highlight the General Settings.
4. Now, select the HDMI Ultra HD option and select the HDMI port to which you have connected your gaming console.
You have three options to choose from,
- Standard: This will be the default setting.
- Optimal: Switching to this will give you the best gaming picture quality with slightly higher input lag than the Optimal (Auto Game) option.
- Optimal (Auto Game): Switching to Optimal (Auto Game) will give you a variable refresh rate and low input lag. But you cannot get the picture quality like Optimal mode. This mode is most suitable for first-person shooter games.
